Apples have been grown in the Nelson region since the arrival of the first European settlers in 1842. Initially planted in home orchards, it was soon discovered that apples thrived in the local climate. The fruit consistently produced excellent flavour, texture, and colour—qualities still highly valued today.

By the early 1900s, large areas—particularly in the Moutere Hills—were planted in apples, laying the foundation for a thriving industry that has supported generations of orchardists.

Nelson is also the birthplace of the renowned Braeburn apple, first discovered in Lower Moutere. While the variety is now grown worldwide, local growers proudly claim that the best Braeburns still come from their region of origin.

Over the past century, apple growing has undergone significant transformation. Modern orchards are now intensively planted using dwarf rootstocks, allowing for greater efficiency and fruit quality.

Today, Integrated Fruit Production (IFP) is standard practice. Pests and diseases are closely monitored and managed with targeted intervention. Orchard operations follow best practice protocols, which are documented and independently audited to meet Global G.A.P certification standards.

Wai-West Horticulture’s apple orchards are located on the fertile Waimea Plains, nestled between the Moutere Hills and Richmond. These high-performing, well-managed orchards produce a wide range of premium varieties.
